Pangang upholds the backbone of China's high-end manufacturing industry with titanium

On March 26th, the titanium company received good news: Panzhihua Iron and Steel's 35000 ton sponge titanium expansion project has achieved production for six consecutive months, and its technical and economic indicators have been up to standard for three consecutive months. The achievement of this outstanding result means that Pangang has taken a crucial step in its journey to build the world's largest sponge titanium monomer production base. At the same time, the independent and controllable ability of Panzhihua Iron and Steel's high-end titanium metal industry chain has achieved a new leap, effectively strengthening the "titanium" backbone of China's high-end manufacturing industry.
It is reported that sponge titanium, as the basic raw material for titanium industry applications, is a crucial step in breaking through the core technology of sponge titanium production in order to obtain pure titanium, titanium materials, titanium powder, and other titanium components. For a long time, China's high-end titanium materials have mainly relied on imports. After years of hard work, Pangang has successfully overcome numerous challenges in the research and production of sponge titanium, becoming the only enterprise in China that fully utilizes Panxi vanadium titanium resources to build a complete titanium industry chain.
In April 2022, Panzhihua Iron and Steel's 35000 ton sponge titanium expansion project was officially launched. This project is an important measure for Pangang to deeply implement Ansteel Group's "Third Pole" strategy and lay out the titanium industry from a high starting point. The project adopts core processes such as molten salt chlorination method with independent intellectual property rights, aiming directly at the "global sponge titanium monomer production base". The project was completed and put into operation in August 2023, setting a fast record for the domestic single sponge titanium factory to achieve production and technical and economic indicators.
Since the commissioning of Panzhihua Iron and Steel's 35000 ton sponge titanium expansion project, the titanium material company has regarded the project's production and efficiency as the "top priority" project, and has been working hard to solve the difficulties in adapting the old and new production lines. Focusing on key areas such as project defect elimination, stable operation of equipment, and optimization of production organization, we carried out a "demonstration and leadership" style research and development, successfully completing a series of engineering transformations such as refined mineral oil refueling system and closed slag discharge of slurry furnace. At the same time, a research team was established to achieve production and efficiency, and experts from the research institute successfully broke through technical bottlenecks such as mineral oil vanadium removal, solving the bottlenecks, difficulties, and pain points in the production process in one fell swoop.
At present, the operation of Panzhihua Iron and Steel's 35000 ton sponge titanium expansion production line is stable. The four major resource balance systems of "titanium, magnesium, chlorine, and chlor alkali" have been successfully established, achieving a "dual improvement" in both production and quality. Among them, the production of ultra soft titanium and small particle titanium exceeded the target values by 19% and 2.5% respectively, the titanium yield increased by 0.01% compared to the target value, and the manufacturing cost decreased by 0.9% compared to the target value.
With the project reaching production capacity, the total production capacity of Pangang sponge titanium will exceed 60000 tons per year, accounting for 20% of the total domestic production capacity. This scale not only breaks the record for domestic single sponge titanium factories, but also helps Panzhihua Iron and Steel to enter the global titanium industry and promote China to break away from its dependence on imported titanium materials. The head of the titanium material company stated that in the next step, the company will target the urgently needed specialized sponge titanium products in the industry, continue to carry out process technology research and new product development work, and add more hardcore confidence to "Made in China".
